Local Crystallinity in Twisted Cellulose Nanofibers

چکیده
Cellulose is crystallized by plants and other organisms into fibrous nanocrystals. The mechanical properties of these nanofibers the formation helical superstructures with energy dissipating adaptive optical depend on ordering polysaccharide chains within nanocrystals, which typically measured in bulk average. Direct measurement local chain arrangement has been elusive. In this study, we use emerging technique scanning electron diffraction to probe packing across cellulose reveal twisting sections nanofibers. We then atomic force microscopy shed light size dependence inherent driving for nanofiber twisting. direct crystalline twisted regions important implications understanding single-cellulose-fibril that influence interactions between nanocrystals dense assemblies. This may enable extraction separation processes be tailored optimized.

Carbohydrates in Oxygen Delignification. Part I: Changes in Cellulose Crystallinity
INTRODUCTION There has been a steady increase in the use of oxygen delignification worldwide since the first commercial installation in South Africa in 1970 [1]. The degree of delignification achieved in the oxygen stage is ultimately limited by pulp strength considerations, and averages 40% delignification industrially [2,3]. With greater degrees of delignification, the oxygen delignification ...
متن کاملEvaluation of the genotoxicity of cellulose nanofibers
BACKGROUND Agricultural products and by products provide the primary materials for a variety of technological applications in diverse industrial sectors. Agro-industrial wastes, such as cotton and curaua fibers, are used to prepare nanofibers for use in thermoplastic films, where they are combined with polymeric matrices, and in biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, amongst other ...
متن کاملCrystallinity and nanostructure of cellulose from different sources
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used for assessment of structural differences of celluloses of various origins. Investigated celluloses were: bacterial celluloses cultured in presence of pectin and/or xyloglucan, as well as commercial celluloses and cellulose extracted from apple parenchyma. The crystallinity index (XC%) varied from 25 ...
متن کاملMonitoring Wood Degradation during Weathering by Cellulose Crystallinity
The degree of crystallinity of cellulose was used for assessing the degradation level of coated and uncoated samples of pine wood after weathering. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy measured the changes in the surface crystallinity of cellulose resulting from weathering, both natural and artificial. Both techniques revealed an increase in the crystallin...
متن کاملDetermination of cellulose crystallinity by terahertz-time domain spectroscopy.
Terahertz-time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has the ability to probe the crystallinity of several materials, due to the interaction of THz radiation with optical phonons in crystal lattices. In this work, THz-TDS has been used to quantify the degree of crystallinity of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) samples. The THz spectra of cellulose present absorption features which could be directly cor...
